TECHNOLOGY IN EYE CARE

It’s easy to forget about your eye health when you have perfect vision. We can provide the peace of mind that comes with knowing that your eyes are healthy or that we can detect the smallest changes before you do.  Only by having the most advanced diagnostic equipment can we provide early detection, monitoring and treatment of eye diseases such as glaucoma, macular degeneration and diabetes.

Technology that protects your eyes - early detection, clearer vision

For more than 25 years our practice has had the reputation for utilising the most up-to-date technology to thoroughly assess our patients' eye health. This cutting-edge equipment has improved our ability to give sharper vision with spectacles and contact lenses.

In addition, it allows us to detect previously undetectable eye conditions at their earliest stages, allowing prompt referral to specialists, and thus, helping to prevent further vision loss.

But you could be completely unaware that you have a sight threatening eye disease.

Up to 80% of serious vision problems can be prevented or treated — especially when detected early.

HEIDELBERG Spectralis 4D OCT

We have invested in a Spectralis 4D OCT eye scanner which is equivalent to a CAT scanner for the eyes. It is the instrument of choice for retinal specialists throughout the world. Unlike retinal colour photographs and other 3D eye scanners, Spectralis adds a 4th dimension, allowing us to monitor changes in your eyes over time and thereby detect a number of common sight threatening eye conditions that affect the retina and optic nerve. Early detection of these conditions is essential if we are to prevent our patients suffering permanent loss of sight.

  • It’s easy to forget about your eye health when you have perfect vision. But you could be completely unaware that you have a sight threatening eye disease. One in two cases of sight loss can be avoided through early detection and the right treatment at the right time. We can provide the peace of mind that comes with knowing that your eyes are healthy or that we see the smallest change before you do. Only by having the most advanced diagnostic equipment can we provide early detection.

  • OCT is analogous to a CAT scan for the eyes. It uses near infrared light to measure the thickness of the different layers that make up the retina at the back of the eye.

  • Ideally everyone should have an OCT eye scan whilst their eyes are healthy. OCT is then able to detect developing eye abnormalities which often start long before you notice your sight being affected. For those with existing eye conditions such as Age Related Macula Degeneration (AMD), diabetic eye disease or retinopathy and glaucoma, OCT should be performed at regular intervals to determine if the condition is getting worse. For example, 20% of ‘dry’ macula degeneration cases develop into the more serious ‘wet’ form. In a very short time major changes in the eye can lead to severe and permanent loss of vision. The Spectralis cutting-edge OCT comparison software can detect even the slightest changes and that changes everything when it comes to saving sight.

  • Our optometrist will advise you if there are any serious concerns about your eyesight and will arrange to send a written report to your GP. Your GP will, in turn, then arrange for you to be seen by a consultant ophthalmologist, usually at a local hospital.  If you have to return to us for additional scans then comparative data will  be able to be collected to indicate any worsening of  your eye condition. This information will ensure rapid, accurate diagnosis and can help an ophthalmologist decide on the optimum method of treating your condition, thereby improving the chances of you having a good visual outcome.

  • Most of the eye conditions an OCT eye scan can help diagnose are treatable providing they are detected at an early enough stage. Glaucoma, diabetic retinopathy and ‘wet’ AMD are some of the commonest conditions which can potentially cause blindness. Now that their effects on the eyes can be much more closely followed with OCT eye scans we are often able to save sight that, just a few years ago, would have been permanently lost.

  • No, the OCT instrument does not make contact with your eyes. There is a short flash of light which occurs during the scanning process, but this is not uncomfortable.

  • If your eyes are healthy you should have an OCT eye scan every  time you have a routine eye examination. This will usually mean every 1 or 2 years.

OPTOS California

OPTOS CALIFORNIA - Ultra-widefield (UWF™) retinal imaging.

With traditional retinal cameras only 10-100⁰ of the retina can be captured in a single image, called an OPTOmap. The Optos California is the only true, clinically validated, ultra-widefield retinal image that can capture 82% or 200⁰ of the retina, in a single capture.

Quick and simple to operate the Optos California allows unparalleled views of the retina which provides us with opportunity to detect a number of common sight threatening eye diseases such as macular degeneration (AMD), diabetic retinopathy and retinal detachment.

ZEISS Humphrey visual field analyser

Protecting Your Sight

The ZEISS Humphrey Visual Field Analyser is a trusted, advanced test that checks how well you can see in all areas of your vision, not just straight ahead. It’s especially important for detecting early signs of conditions like glaucoma, which can affect side (peripheral) vision without you noticing. The test is simple, painless, and takes only a few minutes. By mapping your visual field, your optometrist can spot even the smallest changes over time, helping to protect your sight & allowing early treatment if needed.

ZEISS i.Profiler plus autorefractor, topographer & aberrometer

Personalised Vision Assessment

The ZEISS i.Profiler plus is an advanced eye measurement device that goes beyond a standard sight test. In just a few seconds, it creates a detailed “map” of your eyes, measuring thousands of points to detect even the smallest irregularities that can affect your vision. This allows your optometrist to tailor your prescription more precisely, helping you achieve sharper, clearer vision—especially in low light or at night. The i.Profiler plus also helps identify subtle vision issues that traditional tests may miss, ensuring your glasses or contact lenses are uniquely optimised for your eyes.

ZEISS Visufit 1000

Perfect Fit, Perfect Vision

The ZEISS VISUFIT 1000 is a cutting-edge digital measuring system that ensures your glasses are fitted with absolute precision. This allows your lenses to be customised to your facial features and frame style, giving you sharper, more comfortable vision. You can also try on different frames ‘virtually’ to see how they will look before you choose.

ZEISS Visuphor 500

The ZEISS Visuphor 500 is a state-of-the-art digital refraction unit designed to make eye examinations faster, more accurate, and more comfortable. With smooth, automated lens changes and advanced testing functions, it allows optometrists to determine your prescription with exceptional precision.

This technology ensures you receive the most accurate prescription for optimal vision correction.
